Beside was started in 1989 by a group of local people interested in developing a befriending scheme for people in the borough with mental health needs. It became a registered charity in 1995.

Today, our activities take place at our premises at 60-61 Old Nichol St. We function as a non-residential community in which members with longer term mental health concerns are supported to explore and reinforce ways in which they can help themselves and each other, mainly through social activity, experiential learning and group work. Our part time staff team of five and a few sessional workers organise 6- 8 group sessions per week.
